Synopsis

The play is set at Begum Bilquis' house, where she lives with her five daughters, her maid & confidante Husna, a servant and her senile mother who she keeps locked up. The conservative Muslim family lives in a small town of U.P. in pre-independent India. The play opens on the fourth day of her second husband's death. The domineering matriarch Bilquis imposes a year long mourning period in accordance with family traditions. She insists on keeping her daughters indoors away from men & is willing to use violence &  threats to do so.

Husna, who knows her best is the voice of wisdom & mediates between Bilquis & her daughters. None of the daughters are happy with Bilquis' & impositions, least of all her youngest daughter Aadila, a free spirit who willingly defies her, leading to a tragic end.
