Synopsis
One of the most controversial periods of Independent Indian History ‘The Indian Emergency” lasted between 1975 to 1977. The order bestowed upon the Prime Minister the authority to rule by decree, allowing elections to be suspended and civil liberties to be curbed. For much of the Emergency, most of Gandhi's political opponents were imprisoned and the press was censored.
In this period of complete abolishment of independence, Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena wrote ‘BAKRI', a play that goes against the emergency, as a musical farce.
BAKRI directed by MS Sathyu was one of the opening plays of the famous Prithvi Theatre in Bombay (now Mumbai) and opened as early as 1978. BAKRI is a timeless political satire and portrays the usage of Gandhi’s philosophy to suit the need of those in power.
